Google's AI Overviews summarise answers at the top of many results pages, and AI Mode offers a fuller conversational search experience. For businesses, the question is simple: how to rank in Google AI Overviews, or more precisely, how to be one of the sources Google links to.
What AI Overviews and AI Mode are
AI Overviews show a generated summary for some queries, with links to supporting web pages. Google expanded them broadly in the United States in May 2024, as announced on its blog, and has continued to expand them to more countries and languages. AI Mode is a separate, more conversational experience that can break a question into subtopics and search them in parallel before answering.
Both appear more often for complex, multi-part or exploratory questions than for simple navigational searches.
What Google says about optimising for AI features
Google's guidance on AI features and your website is clear on several points:
- There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond being indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet.
- No special schema or AI-specific file is needed.
- The same SEO best practices apply: helpful content, good page experience, crawlability and accurate structured data that matches visible content.
- Clicks from AI features are counted in Search Console's overall web search data.
In other words, AI Overviews reward the fundamentals.
How sources tend to be selected
Google has not published a detailed formula, but sources linked in AI Overviews are typically pages that:
- Rank well or are relevant for the query or related sub-queries.
- Contain a passage that directly supports part of the answer.
- Come from sites that demonstrate expertise and trust on the topic.
- Present information clearly enough to extract and attribute.
Because AI Mode and AI Overviews may look at several related questions, a page that answers one sub-question very well can be cited even if it does not rank first for the main query.
How to rank in Google AI Overviews: content steps
1. Cover the follow-up questions
Map the main question and the natural follow-ups a user would ask. A guide to "SaaS customer acquisition cost" should also answer how to calculate it, what a good payback period is and how to reduce it, as our CAC guide does.
2. Lead sections with clear answers
Use question-style headings and answer in the first sentences of each section. This is the core of answer engine optimization.
3. Show first-hand experience
Google's helpful content guidance emphasises experience and expertise. Include real examples, original screenshots, processes you actually use and named authors with relevant backgrounds.
4. Be specific and accurate
Concrete numbers (with sources), steps and comparisons are easier to cite than vague statements. Update content when facts change.
5. Use helpful formats
Tables for comparisons, numbered steps for processes and short definitions for concepts all make extraction easier.
Technical steps
- Confirm key pages are indexed in Search Console.
- Avoid nosnippet or restrictive max-snippet directives on pages you want cited.
- Make sure main content is in the HTML and not dependent on heavy client-side rendering.
- Maintain accurate structured data for Organization, Article and other relevant types; see our schema markup guide.
- Keep pages fast and usable on mobile.
Measuring AI Overviews traffic
Search Console includes AI Overviews and AI Mode clicks and impressions within the overall Performance report, without a separate filter at the time of writing. Practical approaches:
- Track impressions and CTR changes for question-style queries where AI Overviews commonly appear.
- Manually check priority queries and record whether your site is cited.
- Monitor conversions from organic landing pages, not just clicks; visitors from AI features may arrive better informed.
Our guide to zero-click searches explains how to value visibility when fewer clicks occur.
Google AI Mode: what changes
AI Mode encourages longer, conversational queries and follow-up questions. Content that covers a topic thoroughly, with clear sections for sub-questions, is well suited. Building topic clusters helps because related pages can be cited for different parts of a conversation.
Industries where AI Overviews matter most
AI Overviews appear more often for informational and comparison questions than for simple brand or navigation searches. Businesses whose buyers research complex topics, such as software, finance, healthcare, education and professional services, tend to see more AI features on their important queries. In these sectors, authoritative explanatory content and clear authorship are especially important, because Google applies higher standards to topics that can affect people's money, health or safety. Local businesses see AI features too, but local packs and business profiles usually remain the main visibility surface.
What not to do
- Do not create thin pages that only restate questions without depth.
- Do not mass-produce AI-written pages without expert review; Google's spam policies cover scaled content abuse.
- Do not add structured data for content that is not visible.
- Do not chase AI Overviews at the expense of conversion-focused pages.
