Buyers increasingly ask AI assistants questions they once typed into a search box: "What are the best tools for client reporting?", "How do I fix a traffic drop after a migration?", "Which agencies specialise in SaaS SEO?". The answers are generated, not listed. Generative engine optimization is the work of making sure your brand is part of those answers and described accurately.
What is generative engine optimization?
GEO, sometimes called AI search optimization or LLM optimization, focuses on how generative systems select and summarise information. The term became widely used after a 2023 research paper by academics from Princeton and other institutions, which tested how content changes affected visibility in AI-generated responses. Adding clear citations, quotations and statistics were among the changes associated with better visibility.
In practice, GEO is not a separate discipline that replaces SEO. It extends good SEO with extra attention to how machines extract, verify and attribute information.
How AI search engines choose sources
Different systems work differently, but most AI search experiences follow a similar pattern:
- Retrieve: search an index (their own or a search engine's) for pages relevant to the question.
- Evaluate: prefer sources that appear relevant, credible and clear.
- Synthesise: combine information from several sources into an answer.
- Attribute: show links or citations to some of the sources used.
Two consequences follow. First, if your pages are not crawlable or indexed, they cannot be retrieved. Second, content that states facts clearly and supports them is easier to synthesise and cite.
GEO vs SEO
| Area | Traditional SEO | Generative engine optimization |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank pages in search results | Be included and cited in AI-generated answers |
| Unit of competition | The page | Passages, facts and brand mentions |
| Key signals | Relevance, authority, links, experience | Clarity, verifiability, entity consistency, authority |
| Success metric | Rankings, clicks, conversions | Citations, mentions, referral traffic, accuracy of descriptions |
| Foundation | Crawlable, indexable, helpful content | The same, plus quotable structure and corroboration elsewhere |
Our comparison of SEO vs AEO vs GEO goes deeper into where the disciplines overlap.
A practical GEO strategy
1. Make sure AI crawlers can access your content
Check robots.txt rules for search and AI crawlers. Many companies block AI crawlers by accident through blanket rules or security tools. Decide deliberately which crawlers to allow; for example, OpenAI documents separate crawlers for search and training on its bots page. Our guide to llms.txt and AI crawler access explains the options.
2. Answer questions directly
Start key sections with a concise, factual answer, then expand. AI systems often extract short passages; a clear two- or three-sentence answer under a question heading is easy to use and attribute. This overlaps with answer engine optimization.
3. Strengthen your entity
Use consistent company names, descriptions, founders, locations and service names across your website, structured data, LinkedIn, review sites and directories. Inconsistent facts make it harder for systems to describe you confidently. See our entity SEO guide.
4. Add original evidence
Generic content is interchangeable. Original data, documented processes, specific examples and expert commentary give AI systems a reason to cite you rather than someone else. Always state sources for statistics.
5. Earn corroboration elsewhere
AI answers often reflect what many credible sources agree on. Mentions in trade publications, review sites, community discussions and partner pages reinforce your expertise. B2B link building and digital PR therefore matter for GEO as well as SEO.
6. Structure content for extraction
Use descriptive headings, short paragraphs, lists, tables and FAQs. Add structured data that matches visible content, as explained in our schema markup guide.
7. Keep content current
AI systems and users both prefer up-to-date information. Date your content, review important pages regularly and update facts such as pricing and features.
Measuring GEO
GEO measurement is still developing. Practical approaches include:
- AI referral traffic: track visits from AI assistants in analytics. Our guide to tracking AI traffic in GA4 shows how.
- Prompt testing: regularly ask relevant questions in major assistants and record whether and how your brand appears.
- Self-reported attribution: ask leads how they found you; "ChatGPT" and "Perplexity" are increasingly common answers.
- Brand description accuracy: check whether AI tools describe your services, pricing and location correctly.
Treat results as directional. AI answers vary by phrasing, user and time.
GEO for B2B companies
B2B buyers use AI assistants to understand categories, compare vendors and draft requirements. To appear in those conversations, publish honest comparison and use-case content, maintain strong review site profiles and make your expertise visible through named authors. Our guide to showing up in ChatGPT search covers OpenAI-specific steps, and Perplexity SEO covers Perplexity.
Where to start
- Audit crawler access and indexing.
- Identify the twenty questions buyers ask most and check how AI tools answer them today.
- Improve or create pages that answer those questions directly with evidence.
